Tim Tam Slam and Flooding the Zone

Hello my dear! I hope you had a great week! Im looking forward to talking to you and hearing all about it. We had a pretty good week—despite the circumstances!


  1. Sunday night we did the Tim Tam slam while Michael was home. We invited Matt and Nolan and Tommy to join us. Matt had been eating a Keto diet, and I think slamming a Tim Tam was a little bit much for him. But all of the other boys seemed to enjoy it!
  2. Monday was the inauguration.  It was the first inauguration in a very long time that I didn’t watch. I guess it was my way of protesting. I wore black because I feel like the country is moving into a dark period. Trump came into office with a bang. He signed like 100 executive orders, fired a bunch of people, put a spending freezeze on foreign aid and other government operations. Trump sent troops to defend border from “invading criminals.” He’s running immigration raids all over the country. Threatening to withhold aid to California after the fires. Taking away security clearance and details from his political enemies like Dr Fauci and Mike Pompeo. He released all of the people involved with January 6 attack on a he capital from jail—including the men who violently attacked police officers.  Oh also—he’s trying take away citizenship from people who were born in this country. It’s all a bit much. The term for it is “flooding the zone.” He’s just causing so much chaos that it becomes too overwhelming to follow it all. Sigh. I can’t believe we have 4 more years of this nonsense. 
  3. I have a love/hate relationship with January. I hate the cold and dark and nasty air. But I love having my schedule slow down. I’ve been working on organizing photos, and I put up some wallpaper in the pantry. It’s kinda nice to putter around the house sometimes. 
  4. This year I joined the Legislative Action Committee for the state PTA. The legislative session started this week, so the LAC will meet weekly until the session is over. We were educated on bills and then voted to support or oppose them as a PTA body. Kind of interesting. 
  5. Michael got to go listen to a speaker who writes for the Atlantic speak about religion. It was 100% his jam. He even got a free book and shook hands with Elder Christofferson!
  6. The kids all had something fun to do this weekend. Jett got to go in his first young men’s camp out with the deacons. He had so much fun. He said it was one of his Top 10 things of all time. They built snow caves, played ghost in the graveyard, slept outside, went sledding. Super fun!
  7. Ethan got to go to ski school with his friend Landon. He went to see the school play Cinderella, and had a whole group of friends over to hang out last night. 
  8. Blake went to the Sweetheart dance with Elyse. She is pretty and tall, and he had a good time! They went ice skating for the day date, and Blake took a few falls!
  9. Tate got to go to a special event at the Living Planet Aquarium as Gavin’s guest. It was a fun party hosted for kids with health problems and special needs. They had food and prizes and dancing. It’s so awesome they have events like that for those kids to feel special and have a night to forget their troubles. 
  10. Yesterday Great Nana hosted everyone for “Spudnuts.” She was unable to make donuts on Halloween this year because she had shingles. So it was good to see that she is feeling better now.  And the hot donuts were delicious!
  11. Bonus! Michael Ferguson told us in Sunday School today that there is a white hawk with a red tail (a leustic red-tailed hawk) who lives in the North Station Park area where we frequently drive. So I’m going to keep my eyes and out and see if I can spot it.

Hello my dear! Well, besides the food, it sounds like you had a really amazing week last week. Having all of the mission presidents and apostles there must have been such a neat experience. I’m sure it was a very powerful feeling being in their presence. How cool that you were able to be there and pass the sacrament. I’m sure that’s something you will always remember. I want to hear more about speaking Mandarin with Elder Gong and his wife. You didn’t get to speak to him directly did you? Perhaps he just came to speak directly with all of the mandarin language missionaries? I’m glad you are back to playing basketball, but sorry all of your OG friends are gone now. I’m guessing you are starting to feel like a true MTC veteran watching all your friends come and go. Last Week at the MTC!

Hey there— I’ve been thinking about you all week. I’m hoping you have enjoyed your last week in the MTC and have soaked up every last bit of edification and inspiration from your devotionals and musical numbers. What a life-changing opportunity this has been for you! Never again in your life will you have the time and ability to devote all your energies to gospel study and service. So make the most of it! I know you have. I’m so proud of you and the effort you have put in to becoming a strong missionary, and I know you will make a difference in those you teach, serve with, and in your own life. Is tomorrow the day you fly out? You must be so excited! And maybe nervous? Hey Ty— I hope you have had a great week. Was this the week of the mission leader seminar with all of the general authorities? Was it great? Did you get to serve them the sacrament? Jett wants to know! Is it over and do you have access to the gym again? Ok clarification—That headline about the mother and the snake—it kept popping up at the bottom of other news stories I was reading. Because I’ve been googling and taking about and thinking about snakes a lot lately. And our phones are listening to us and basically can read our minds now, so they advertise to us what they think we want to see. But I DO NOT want to see headlines about snakes eating mothers. Anyway. I went back and read the article. And it really happened. A (human) mother lining in Indonesia went missing.
