Fall is my Favorite
Well hello my dears! I hope you both had an excellent week! I’m looking forward to talking to you both tonight.
Here’s my update on what we’ve been up to this week---
- This week really felt like fall. General Conference. Rain. More Rain. Cooler weather. Changing leaves. Pumpkin bread. Caramel Popcorn. Football. I woke up today to see snow in the mountains! Fall is such a lovely season in Utah.
- The neighborhood Pass the Pumpkin game is happening again, and it’s awesome. We’ve had the pumpkin on our porch a few times already. I love seeing all the neighborhood kids out running around and playing together. What a great tradition. Tate is not allowed to cross Shepard Lane without an adult—even to steal the pumpkin. But he came home the other day and said that Jett is 11 and Salesi is 11. 11 + 11 = Adult, so can he cross the street with them? Haha. Boy math!
- I got a lot of calls and notifications from the schools this week. Kids late to school. Bumps and bruises on the playground. And maybe for the first time—a call from the principal’s office. Jett was in for a chat with the assistant principal because he hit the girl who sits next to him in class. He’s been complaining about Juliana for weeks. Her classroom “job” is basically to tattle on her classmates. I’m having a hard time thinking of a worse idea for classroom management, but I digress. . . Anyway. . . Juliana spends all day writing down whenever her classmates make an infraction, and when the infractions pile up, the kids lose recess or party time. Juliana is not above taking bribes to remove infractions, or giving her friends special treatment. Jett was not about to bribe Juliana, nor will he tattle to the teacher. And since he sits next to Juliana, he is her prime subject for infractions. She drove Jett nearly insane every day writing him down for the most nit-picky things. Jett finally snapped from the injustice of it all and hit her in the shoulder. He said it was barely a shove, but she cried, and he got in trouble. Jett now understands that under no circumstances may he hit a classmate (or a girl), and Juliana’s infraction cards are now discarded by Mr. Bullard.
- On the same day Jett also hurt his finger at recess. He now has what’s called a “mallet finger.” My medical vocabulary increases by the day it seems. Basically the tendon that holds his ring finger straight tore at the last joint. So he can’t straighten out his finger. He has to keep his finger in a brace for 4-6 weeks, and it will be a miracle if he can manage that because the stupid thing can slide off easily. But if it comes off, the tendon will tear again. Sigh. So soccer, football, basketball, and Get Air was a little more complicated yesterday. Good thing Jett is not a complainer.
- I got a text from Uncle Ryan this week saying that he has a broken back! He said his back had been killing him for a few weeks, so he finally went to the ER to get a CT scan, and it showed that his back has two fractured vertebrae. Two different spots. It seems that perhaps one spot is an old injury that didn’t heal properly, and one injury is new. But he has no idea how it would have happened. Isn’t that crazy?! Poor Ryan.
- The kids all had fun parties to go to this week. Tate was invited to a fun trick-or treat night with Gavin at a special needs event at the Real Soccer Stadium. He came home with a smile and a huge bag full of candy and prizes. Jett got to go to Nate’s birthday party at Get Air. And Ethan got to go to Sage’s birthday party at Classic Fun Center (Woo woo!). Jett and I got to have Wendy’s for lunch at the birthday table at school. He was pretty upset when I arrived 20 minutes late. He thought I had forgotten, and I thought I was on time for once. Turns out they changed the lunch schedule from the one I had taped up on the desk cabinet. Why did they swap the 5th and 6th graders time? Random. Anyway. He cheered up once I handed him his Biggie Bag and frosty! The boys also got to go bowling for mutual, and I had book club at our house, so not a bad week as far as activities went.
- Dad and I were invited to join Michael at the Taylorsville temple for Everett’s sealing, and it was really lovely. I really enjoyed seeing all of Michael’s friends there to support Everett. So fun to see them all growing up!
- On Saturday Dad and I enjoyed a full day of Jett’s sporting events. Unfortunately his teams did not win. But we still had a good time watching. And then we had Orlando’s for dinner. Yum!
- President Nelson’s funeral was this week. I only got to listen to half of it because I was in meeting that ran long that morning. I’m hoping to go back and listen to the beginning later. Dad has been eagerly awaiting the news of a new First Presidency. His patience is being tried!
- It’s been another *wild* week in the news. I mean really. It’s like drinking from a fire hydrant reading the news every day. The federal government is shut down, and ICE agents are terrorizing immigrants. Trump is firing scientists from the CDC, and getting the DOJ to prosecute his political enemies. BUT—there has been an extraordinarily good news development this week—some sort of peace deal has been negotiated in Israel. Hamas has agreed to release the 20 remaining hostages who are alive, and Israel has agreed to a ceasefire. Refugees are pouring back into Gaza and Humanitarian aid is on its way. Really it’s a miracle. I don’t know if the deal will actually hold, but just being able to get hostages home and Humanitarian aid is a really big reason to celebrate.
That’s all I’ve got! I hope you are both healthy, happy, and busy!
Talk to you soon!
Love, Mom
